Getting Started

Where do I download your software?

We don't provide software to connect to dialup because it's already installed on your computer. All operating systems have included software to use a dialup connection for at least ten years.

We do provide software with a listing of our dialup numbers and for the MegaBoost accelerator: Downloads

How do I set up my new service?

Complete instructions are found here: Setting up Your Service

I am getting error 691 when I try to connect. What does this mean?

This error has several possible causes. The most common cause is that your account has expired. This can also be caused by using the wrong username or password or the access number is malfunctioning. See this page for help on error 691.

Do I haveto use webmail? I prefer Outlook Express.

You can use Outlook Express in POP3 or IMAP mode. You need to log into webmail and enable POP3 or IMAP first. If you don't enable it, it won't work and we can't enable it remotely.

I recieved an email indicating my credit card was declined. How can I fix this?

This is a common problem. In order to battle credit card fraud, we have enabled strict rules on credit card approval. This sometimes results in valid cards from honest customers being declined. Please see log in and update your credit card information to include the exact Name, Addres, and Zip Code on your biling statement. If your card was issued from a bank outside the US or Canada, you will need to contact us for manual processing.

How do cancel my account?

Use this form to cancel your account.

I forgot my password. How can I retrieve it?

You will need to contact us and we will look it up for you. We don't offer automated password retreival. We are unable to view e-mail passwords. We can only reset your e-mail password.

I thought MegaBoost was $4.00. Why was I charged a different amount?

Sometimes your dialup account and Megaboost service are created on different days. Our billing system may use a daily prorated amount for the first partial month resulting in an initial price less than $4.00. Each month after the first will be $4.00.

I can log into my account manager, but when I click on anything, it logs me out. What is wrong?

Can I get a setup disk?

A setup disk is not necessary with US Netizen. All of the software you need is already on your computer. This means you can be online immediately after signing up. Accelerated accounts require a small software download to achieve high speeds. Optionally, you may download software that contains all our access numbers so that you have them with you when you travel.

Can I get Newsgroups?

In the olden days, as kids would say, you would access newsgroups using a news reader like Outlook Express. Your ISP would have to support this with a specific server.

Although this still works, it is outdated. All newsgroups can be accessed much more efficiently using Google Groups. From Google Groups, you can browse or search all Usenet messages back to 1981. You can also post messages to most groups.

Discussions are moving to a bulletin board system rather then Usenet. Individual websites set up a bulletin board that they can moderate to reduce illegal, improper, or plain worthless messages. Most of these allow anyone to read the messages, but require you to log in to post. Access these bulletin boards directly from the websites that host them. Although it's debatable whether the newer bulletin boards are better than Usenet, this is the current trend.

We found that very few customers actually use the newsgroup servers.  In order to save money for all of our customers, we eliminated the expense of providing a service used only by a few.

Do you have hosting for personal accounts?

US Netizen does not include hosting.  This is because very few dial-up customers actually post a personal website.  Including webspace in dial-up packages increases costs for everyone to benefit only a few.  By not including webspace, we are saving you money by not charging you for something you don't use.

If you want a personal website, there are nearly an infinite number if hosting companies that offer this service.  Free hosting is popular at Geocities.   Literally thousands more can be found with a web search for free website hosting.  Most will serve up advertisements on your web page.  You can expect a URL something like http://www.freewebhosting.com/users/~yourname/index.html

If you want a real website, get your own domain name and a low cost hosting service such as 1&1 or GoDaddy.  You will look professional and no third party advertisements will be seen unless you place them there.

Should I choose the Standard Plan or .net Plan?

This depends on your individual needs, of course. For you primary Internet service, we suggest using the regular US Netizen Dialup or High Speed Dialup plans. This gives you access to support technicians 24/7 in case you are having a dialup problem.

If you use your dialup connection for less than critical needs or are confident in your skills to manage your connection without telephone support, choose the US Netizen.net plans.

Should I choose the Standard Plan or Accelerated Plan?

We highly recommend the accelerated plan.  Depending on the websites you visit, standard dial-up can seem very slow, especially with sites heavy on graphics such as cnn.com, msn.com, ebay.com, and amazon.com. The accelerated plan will improve your Internet experience by loading these types of website significantly faster.  Typically, 3 to 5 times faster on common websites.  This greatly improves your enjoyment of your Internet service.

In some cases, we have seen an improvement up to 19 times faster than standard dial-up, but 3 to 5 times faster is more typical.  The standard marketing hype is "up to 19 times faster" and that is true, but generally a bit optimistic.

Not everything can be accelerated.  These will not download any faster with the accelerated plan: Software downloads including Windows updates,  Compressed music and movies (mp3, divx, etc.), Secure websites (https://),  Anything that uses a VPN.

Is US Netizen compatible with Macintosh/Linux/Other?

US Netizen uses standard ppp connectivity that is compatible with most modern operating systems.  We have confirmed the following operating systems to work without any special configuration:

Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP/2003
Macintosh OS 8.x/9.x/X
Linux KDE/Gnome/Red Hat 7+/Live distros based on Debian/Linspire(Lindows)

Our dialup is NOT compatible with these systems:

WebTV
PS2 Online

We believe that the system is compatible with the following systems, but these have not verified:

Free BSD
PocketPC
Palm

[top]

Is the service "unlimited?"

In a word, no. All dialup Internet service is "limited" in some way. We're just honest about it.  Read all about unlimited Internet service and the real limits imposed on all dialup services.

Other ISPs claim "unlimited access" in their advertisements, but their service agreements contradict this claim with explicit limits. Read some examples of misleading claims of "unlimited access."

Will I be disconnected if my computer is idle?

Yes. If you don't click on anything for 20 minutes, you will be disconnected. We do this to end connections that have accidentally been left on.

How big of an attachment can I e-mail?

Attachment size is limited to 20 MB including the message text. Few mailservers will accept attachments any bigger. If you need to send something bigger than 20 MB, we suggest BigAttachment. They have a limit of 100 MB and your recipient gets a link to download from rather than an attachment that's too big to receive.

Is your service compatible with Vista?

Yes. See these instuctions for setting up dialup with Vista. MegaBoost is also compatible with Vista. Windows Mail works with POP3 after you enable it in webmail.

Can I get more e-mail accounts?

Yes. Contact us with the username an password your want for each account.
