Montana Territorial Names

Most of us know that the State of Montana was Montana Territory prior to statehood, but do you know how many territorial names were user prior to 1889? This article lists all the jurisdictional names that have been used for present-day Montana along with important dates and events.

The continental divide played prominently in the early boundary lines. This is largely due to Louisiana being based on the Mississippi River basin that terminated at the continental divide. Because of this, the list is split into areas west of the divide and east of the divide.

Area Date Territorial Name Notes
East of the Divide 1682 Louisiana (France) One of the five colonies of New France and included the entire Mississippi River basin. The area north of the Arkansas River was called Upper Louisiana.
